Sure Fire Way To Get Rid Of Skunk Smell On Your Pet

The first time I saw a skunk I wondered how something that looks that cute could smell so bad.  And then my dog decided to introduce herself to a skunk that had the audacity to take a short cut across our backyard and I was suddenly the owner with the foulest smelling Silky Terrier in the county.  If you're reading this your pet, like mine,  probably had a close encounter with a white stripe odor maker and you are wondering how you will get that skunk smell out of your dog.

Let me start by telling you what not to do.  The old idea that giving your pet a tomato juice bath will kill the smell, file that one under urban myths.  All you'll get is a pink dog that smells like a skunk.

Natural sure fire skunk smell removal recipe

I'm telling you this really works.  If you don't have all the mixings on hand I'll give you a Plan be a little later in this article.

In a large bucket mix the following:

  • One quart 3% hydrogen peroxide.
  • One quarter cup of baking soda.
  • One teaspoon of dishwashing detergent preferably Dawn.

Use an eyedropper and put a drop of baby oil or olive oil in each of your pet's eyes to prevent the mixture from causing some real irritation.  Don't douse Fidao all at once.  Pick a small section and work the mixture into your pet's fur down to the skin. Keep up this routine until you have covered your entire pet. Let him sit for about ten minutes then thoroughly rinse and repeat if necessary.

Bingo!  Skunk smell gone and your dog smells like…well your dog smells like a dog.

If you have any of the mixture left over dispose of it making sure to use plenty of water to flush it away.  Whatever you do don't try to save it in a closed container because it's likely to explode.  That's right, explode.  Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are not a real stable combination in a closed container.

So what happens if you don't have the ingredients handy is there something else you can do.  The answer is yes.

Hopefully you have a small breed dog otherwise this could get expensive.  What you are going to need is a tube (or more) of toothpaste.  It doesn't matter what kind of toothpaste you use.  Work it in all over your dog and let it dry (your dog is so not going to like this) and then just keep your buddy outside until the paste becomes brittle and falls off.

I'm not absolutely sure what it is about the toothpaste but it will neutralize the skunk smell and leave your dog smelling like the dentist's office.

So now you know two great solutions to one smelly problem.
