If you have bought a new memory foam topper or a new memory foam mattress in the last couple of days you've probably noticed that there is a distinct odor coming from it. That odor is natural and you shouldn't worry about it because it will go away in a couple of days.
That is of course, depending solely on the manufacturer and whether or not the foam you purchased was made in the United States. Some foams manufactured outside of the US contain toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and Polybrominateddiphenylether (PBDE).
But if you purchased a memory foam created in the US then you shouldn't worry.
And if you have allergies you shouldn't worry either. The mattresses have been tested and it was found that the smell does not seem to trigger any allergic reactions. But if are someone who is very sensitive to smell then it can be quite bothersome.
There are a couple of ways to handle the smell of foam.
You can simply not sleep on if for a few days. Let it air out in another room until the smell dissipates significantly. You can also keep the windows open in the room where your mattress is and the smell should waft out of the windows relatively quickly. Also it would help to wash the sheets, bedspread, and pillow cases each morning for the first couple of days and this will also help with the smell. If you have an ozonator machine it can also help you get rid of the smell that initially comes with new memory foam.
